After the beginning of the third empire of Nazis, Karl Kraus contains his experiences and the fragmentary thoughts about the political accidents happened during the several months in Dritte Walpurgisnacht. In this work, information contents are excerpted from the domestic and foreign newspapers, and the witnesses of some immigrants and the paragraphs of abundant classical works are being cited. In particular, Goethe is by far the best of all in the frequency of citation, showing that the 101 sources out of 106 quotations is from Faust.¹?
To begin with, selected quotations are concentrated on revealing political, economical, moral hazard and the aspect of corruption. The description of decayed empire (ActⅠ), allegory of civil war, the world of Seismos (Act Ⅱ) and the quotation excerpted from the decisive combat of civil war (Act Ⅳ) is satirized, giving a hint of the real world. However, the suggestion in the quotation of Faust becomes ultimately magical and prophetic message in the Nazi world (mostly in ActⅡ), coming to an end like the false reality.
The matter of Faust is historically and variably adopted by many writers. But Karl Kraus' attempt is not only adopting and metamorphosing the Faust material, but also quoting and compounding of Faust paragraphs. As a result, unlike the other writers, he is showing the literary achievements by newly creating the meaning of the entire text.
