Henry David Thoreau's Walden has a "special shelf" in Robert Frost's mind, namely the declaration of independence and a "gospel of wisdom." Thoreau's Walden had much to do with the shaping of Frost's nature poetry. Thoreau and Frost's retreat to a less-complex rural world is strategic to gain the perspective needed to comment on their respective contemporary life.
The most significant advantage of their spatial extravagance into a rural world is that natural scenes and things, including farming, provides them with the language of poetic tropes and gain expressions from the close observation and imaginative penetration of the surface of nature. This language is the language of natural facts which came across with poetic imagination, and it can be called the imaginary language to differentiate it from the ordinary spoken and written languages.
Thoreau's Walden and Frost's nature poetry are filled with imaginary language of nature, which enhances the possibility of spiritual redemption of the contemporary people who leads the "lives of quiet desperation". This is from the belief that money is everything and "work" comes before "play." Thoreau and Frost's works of art reverse completely the priorities of work and play, need and love, material and spiritual values. This complete reversal is the common matrix of the aesthetics of extravagance of the Thoreau's Walden and Frost's nature poetry who intends to wake up and deliver the spiritually-slumbering mass of men.
