Purpose: This research aims to analysis the patterns of drug use, and to search for strategies of nursing intervention about drug use based on core category in social context through grounded theory in the elderly women with chronic diseases in community.
Method: Data analysis was carried out according to the stages of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding suggested by Strauss & Corbin (1998). Result: Based on the interview data with participants, 94 concepts, 33 sub-categories, and 16 categories were derived in this research. The process can be divided into the four parts of : pondering for hopes, giving up, stepping away, and turning back. The core category was ‘Living with Drugs’.The findings showed the three types of self-leading, seeking a rumors, and being obstinate. Conclusion: From the above, the patterns of drug use in elderly women with chronic diseases can be seen as adjustment behaviors pattern in facing reality of many complex physical, psychological, social and economic factors associated with ageing and diseases leading to weakness in mind and body at the final stage of their lives.
