This study is aimed at identifying the semantic and pragmatic differences of English causal connectives because and because of. To pursue this goal, this study will first investigate how the same source, a borrowing from Old French par cause de has grammaticalized into the two causal expressions with different grammatical functions. This study will analyze the differences in meaning and use of the two causal connectives in terms of 'domains of use' (Sweetser 1990). According to the hypothesis that causality in speech act domain is more subjective than in content and epistemic ones (Pander Maat and Sanders 2000), the semantic differences of because and because of will also be discussed in terms of subjectivity. In addition, this study will examine the semantic and pragmatic developments of because as a good example of subjectification (Traugott and Dasher 2002) that meanings change from less subjective to more subjective. Finally, this investigation will explore how the semantic and pragmatic differences of because and because of will be illustrated in a synchronic distribution on the basis of British National Corpus.
