The interpretations of noun-noun compounds requires the establishment of an appropriate thematic relation of two constituents (e.g., coffee cup is a cup FOR coffee, but not a cup IN coffee). This study (1) investigates how second language (L2) learners understand diverse thematic relations embedded in noun-noun compounds and (2) explores which thematic relations in the compounds are difficult to interpret. Given the dearth of previous L2 research base on this topic, this study uses a direct method to test L2 learners' knowledge of L2 compounds by implementing a self-paced moving window technique, in which a compound (e.g., coffee cup) and the meaning of the compound (e.g., a cup for coffee) were presented in chunks. The sample populations of this study were an L1 group of English and an L2 group with a comparable proficiency of English and with diverse first language backgrounds. The participants completed the moving window task containing stimuli based on Levi (1978)'s thematic classifications of compounds. Analyses of reaction times and accuracy scores revealed that the L1 group showed a comparable performance in interpreting diverse thematic relations of the compounds whereas the L2 group resulted in difficulty in understanding such thematic relations as USE and MAKE.
