Despite a multi-cultural society based on homogeneity of language and religion, Zanzibar has gone through turbulent times since the introduction and reintroduction of multi-party system in the late 1950s and early 1990s respectively. That is, violent political confrontations in Zanzibar have persisted in the context of politicization of racial identity throughout the aforementioned periods. Indeed, the racial identity in Zanzibar has been manipulated by political actors who were simply to divide the island's multi-racial communities including Africans, Arabs, Persians and Indians into Africans and Arabs. Focusing on the period since the reinstatement of multi-party system in 1992, in particular, this paper attempts to explore the underlying causes of the artificially made racial identity in Zanzibar. Thereafter, it is to highlight what sorts of political means and major issues have been utilized to (re)shape the politicization of racial identity in Zanzibar.
