Unemployment came to be recognized increasingly as a major social problem as the 1990s progressed, while upon the debacle of 2000-2001, the unemployed movement emerged as a major collective actor in Argentine society. It embraces activists who are economically and politically marginal, but are regarded as socially legitimate among a wide swathe of political and opinion forming circles. Involvement in collective action helped forge a shared unemployed identity. This thesis analyses how the movement developed: who became enrolled in its ranks; how the movement defines itself; and what kinds of external factors affected its formation. Particularly this thesis focuses mainly on cultural identity formation based on multiple ideological terms with their mobilizing factors, such as radicalism with Marxism, Autonomous ideas and most importantly Peronism as traditional Argentine political culture. On the one hand, there has been still debate to identify the UM between traditional working class and new poor embedded with increasing informal or social exclusion sectors. On the other hand, many confirm that the UM has self-generated from autonomous ideas embedded Anarchism without any political involvements. However, beyond these romantic ideologies, the most of evidences have emphasized on existing Argentine traditional political culture, such as Peronism and at this time it has transformed with different backgrounds such as ‘Peronist problem-solving network’. On the basis of these ideological differences, there have been many organizations separated with ideological boundary. Thus, it is still an open question whether this inspiring unemployed and popular movement can successfully transform the politics of the future. What has been evident, nevertheless, is that Argentines have been increasingly taking democratic struggles into their own hands.
