Gas hydrates (more precisely clathrate hydrates) are ice-like solid compounds formed from guest gas molecules and host water molecules under sufficiently high pressure condition at a given temperature. The knowledge of hydrate powder decomposition characteristics during decompression is required to design the hydrate pellet production process of GTS (gas to solid) technology, which is considered as an economic alternative for LNG and CNG technology to transport natural gas produced from small and stranded gas wells owing to the mild temperature condition or better compressibility. The sample hydrate powder was prepared within 10L volume cylindrical reactor whose inner wall temperature was maintained at 0℃. Initially, the reactor was filled with 1 ㎏ ice powder having effective particle size between 1 ~ 2 ㎜, and was pressurized up to 6 ㎫. As the formation of hydrate from ice particles continued the reactor pressure decreased until the completion of conversion. The influence of mixing and crushing by stainless steel balls driven by flat blade impeller on hydrate formation was observed. Thus prepared hydrate powder was chilled to the predetermined temperature within the range between -25℃~0℃, and abruptly decompressed to ambient pressure. Then the transient change in the hydrate mass fraction was measured to investigate the role of self-preservation during the hydrate powder decompression.
