Around 1905 Shin Chae Ho, one of the most noted figures of the recent history of Korea, managed to gain knowledge and opportunities to experience Socialist ideologies, which also included Anarchist philosophies. Yet during the 1910s he was still not fully embracing such ideologies, and instead sticked to theories supporting social evolution and ultra-national sentiments, in his continuous efforts to uphold the cause of national liberation. It was when the Russian revolution broke out in 1917 that he abandoned such theories or sentiments, and after the 3.1 Movement he accepted Anarchism as his own thoughts and philosophies.
Shin Chae Ho began to discuss the issue of National liberation from the anarchists' perspectives, and published those thoughts via journals such as Shindaehan(新大韓) or Cheongo(天鼓). He also formed an anarchist organization and engaged in extensive anarchist activities. In January 1923, responding to the Communists' actions, he established some principles derived from his own vision of the anarchism-based national liberation movement. He also joined the Anarchist Eastern Alliance(무정부주의동방연맹) in 1926 and led a series of assassinations, destructions and insurrections. But in 1928 he was arrested by the Japanese police for illegal counterfeiting of foreign currency, an act which was attempted by him to secure funds for their cause. In 1936, he died in jail after he was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment.
Shin Chae Ho enabled the Korean intellects to accept Anarchism as one of the guiding theories for action by suggesting that direct terrorism should be utilized in the overall efforts aiming for national liberation. At the time the international anarchists were starting to openly question the validity in using violent methods, and decided to abandon the practice known as 'propaganda by deed'. Yet the Korean anarchists continued to operate under the cause of supporting the direct revolution of people, and utilized terrorist activities as a vital method in their efforts to achieve national liberation. Later, however, the Korean anarchists shifted their focus in 1936 by deciding to pursue National alliances in 1936.
