HDTV, IPTV, VoIP등과 같은 멀티미디어 보급에 따라 네트워크망은 실시간성과 QoS 보장을 요구받고 있다. 통신망을 별도로 사용하지 않아도 전력공급을 위하여 사용하는 전력선을 통신선로로 이용하도록 하는 기술이 전력선 통신이다. 이러한 통신방식은 소수의 회사들에 의하여 개별적으로 개발이 진행되어 오다가 2005년부터 IEEE에 의하여 표준화가 진행되고 있으며, 최근 완성단계에 와있다. 하지만 표준화가 아직 진행중인만큼 제안된 스펙에 대하여 성능이 검증된 논문이 많지 않다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이러한 전력선 통신에 대한 개괄적인 내용을 기술하고 표준화중인 IEEE의 P1901 MAC의 성능을 시뮬레이터 구현을 통하여 실질적으로 검증하였으며, 실시간성 보장을 위한 개선된 전송 스킴을 제안하였다.
