The essential divine-human relationship in spiritual direction begins with a human yearning for God. The foundational desire of love, composed of both human longing for God and divinely initiated love, plays a central role in creating the divine-human relationship in spiritual direction. Referring to St. John of the Cross, the author addresses the deep and authentic human desire for God as divine love that makes human desire equal.
The author also explores the primary factors of trust, an image of God, and passion in relation to the divine-human relationship in spiritual direction. The author argues that we reach authentic desire through the purgation and healing of desire in factors such as trust, image, memory, and anxiety, which affect the development of and resistance to a relationship with God.
