Sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants were grown to evaluate effects of different calcium and nitrate rates on the seedling growth and against Botrytis cinerea. Two sweet pepper cultivars ‘Boogie’ and ‘Cupra’ and the phenotype SSR of B. cinerea were used. Seedlings were established on the rockwool block (10 × 10 ㎝ × 6.6 ㎝) on 2 March, 2008 and were subjected to different calcium / nitrate concentrations (meqㆍℓ?¹) such as 4.50 / 16.75; 6.50 / 20.75; 8.50 / 24.75; 10.50 / 28.75 and 12.50 / 32.75. Stem diameter and plant height were measured weekly for 6 weeks after treatments. Healthy stems (7 ㎝ in length) of 3-month-old sweet peppers were inoculated with the phenotype SSR of B. cinerea. Calcium content in roots, stems and leaves was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Nitrogen analysis was carried out by gas chromatography coupled with an elemental analyzer (EA). The distribution site of calcium and nitrogen on stems was analyzed by a Fura-2 AM and SEM / EDX. The proper concentration for seedling growth was 8.50 (Ca²?) / 24.75 (NO₃?) (meqㆍℓ?¹) for ‘Boogie’ and ‘Cupra’ with 7.65 ㎜ and 7.27 ㎜ in stem diameter, 18.58 ㎝ and 20.28 ㎝ in plant height 6 weeks after transplanting, respectively. Increasing calcium and nitrate supply was positive to suppress B. cinerea on stems. With regard to calcium and nitrogen analysis, the leaves had more calcium and nitrogen content than stems and roots. The total calcium and nitrogen concentrations in plants increased with increasing calcium and nitrate supply, although there was a little difference between cultivars. Most of the calcium on the stem was located at the edge of epidermis and cell walls around vascular tissues whereas nitrogen on the stems was prevalent throughout the whole stems. Results of this study indicate that the increasing calcium and nitrate in nutrient solution positively affected vegetative growth and also effective against B. cinerea of sweet pepper plants.
