We attempt to empirically analyze how teenager participants of 2008 candlelight vigil remember the latter, what kind of identity they have formed, and how they have been changing over time. This analysis was done via two follow-up surveys of the same teen respondents who participated in the candlelight protest in June 2008. The follow-up surveys were conducted in September 2008 and August 2009 respectively.
The major findings can be summarized as follows. First, candle protest is remembered still as an on-going event with important meaning for the participants. The participants tend to define themselves as ‘candle generation’ and share a strong ‘we’ consciousness. Second, it is found that the respondents were strongly influenced by the experience of participating in candle protest in terms of social and political consciousness. The respondents became more interested in social issues and became more critical as a result of their experiences. Their were very critical the current government and they became more progressive after candle protest. Third, the participation in the candle protest increased interest in and conversation about political issues.
These results enable us to carefully argue that the experience in candlelight vigil of teenagers may play a role in making them new political actors in the future. We many need further follow-up researches to test our argument.
