Stabilization of contaminated sediments by activated carbon amendment is a rising technology which can replace the current treatments such as dredging and capping. This method can effectively reduce the bioavailability and mobility of hydrophobic chemicals in sediments. In this study, we examined the possibility of applying this method to sediments in Korea where heavy metal contamination is another concern. For the application, interactions between sediments and heavy metals should be examined in detail. Also, effective ways for the treatment and reuse of dredged sediments should be developed.
