The use of an in-vehicle navigation system should enable drivers to minimize their attention to the display in order to drive safely. However, current navigational devices are not designed to consider the human cost and effects when the systems are used in the driving situation. In this paper, we present guidelines and recommendations to be used in the design of in-vehicle navigation system from the disciplines of human factors, cognitive science, human-computer interaction and information design.
