This study estimates economic effects of FTAs (Free Trade Agreement) between Korea and its main trading partners. Based on the estimates, we attempt to provide a possible direction for trade liberalization policy. We firstly compare the official Korean trade data with the GTAP Database version 6 and find that the GTAP Database includes incorrect information, which might result from measurement errors. The study considers the macroeconomic effects of FTAs between Korea and the following countries and regions: China, the U.S., Japan, the EU and the ASEAN. Our results appear to indicate that such agreements might have a negative impact on Korea's goods and services balance. However, FTAs are likely to encourage the overall economic growth of Korea. When we consider the impact industry-wise, domestic agricultural industry is negatively affected but manufacturing and service industries are likely to realize dynamic gains through bilateral tariff eliminations. Although FTA should be part of an effective means to boost Korea's economic growth, it should be carried out with caution and as part of a broader economic development strategy.
