This study has two objectives. The first objective is to examine previous studies on Jewish education from a Christian educational perspective in order to highlight the similarities and differences between the two educational systems. The second objective is to provide information for Korean Sunday school teachers and adult congregations on Christian biblical, theological, and educational perspectives of Jewish education.
The article examines the following questions: (1) Can Jewish education be a substitute for Christian education? (2) What aspects of Jewish education can Christian education accept or reject? (3) Are the differences between the two in content or in the educational system? (4) Why should this issue be discussed at this time? (5) Should churches view the Old Testament as Jewish scripture or as part of the Bible for Christianity?
Compared to Jewish education, previous studies note that the current Korean public education does not have a strong focus on nationalism and family education. Like Korean public education, Korean Christian education does not have a strong emphasis on family education. Instead, Korean Christian churches have two separated ministerial systems, i.e., Church education for the children versus worship for the adult congregational ministry.
The strengths of Jewish education are, based on previous studies, categorized into five areas: education for faith growth, home education/family education, children’s education, Jewish public school education, and Jewish education (Torah). Despite the strengths of this educational system, Jewish education cannot ever be Christian education since it does not recognize Jesus as Life and Savior. Without Jesus, it cannot be Christian education even if its system or contents are good for families, the community, or the nation.
This study finds the limitations of Jewish education as (1) the absence of Jesus, i.e., no salvation, (2) no New Testament, only the Old Testament, and (3) traditional teaching methods and the transference of the Jewish heritage. By comparing Korean Christian education with Jewish education, the author suggests that Korean Christian education should adapt its: (1) family oriented education and activities, (2) parental education, (3) faith education/spiritual formation through the worship service, and (4) home education within the relationship to the church.
