This paper aims to study the relation between American culture and women’s experience of modernity in 1950’s by a study of Choi, Jung-Hi’s ‘Endless Romance’.
The inflow of American culture into the South korea that lead to the women’s experience of sexuality and private life in 1950’s. They get in contact with popular magazines and Hollywood films and they are fascinated with American daily life and economic prosperity. But it was a period of nationalistic patriarchy in that age. So many women who want American daily culture were the target of criticism.
Choi Jung Hee’s ‘Endless Romance’ illustrates woman who has individualistic desire(sexuality, romantic love, having the private space, etc.) and breaking down of it. But ‘(toward the patriarchal system)Return and Sufferance’ plot was a device for expressing violence of nationalism and it was a principles of narratives.
