본 연구는 1997년 4월에서 6월까지 경상남도 통영시 홍도에서 괭이갈매기(Larus crassirostris) 새끼의 성장률을 조사하기 위하여 수행되었다. 괭이갈매기 새끼의 성장은 약 20~22일까지 빠르게 성장하였다. 최초 부화 후 도달한 최대몸무게의 나이는 둥지 간에 20~28일의 범위로 다양하고, 최대몸무게의 평균나이는 24.6일이었다. 최대체중의 점근치는 평균 481g이었으며 성조의 체중과 비교하여 1.01배였다. 성장속도계수는 0.153이었으며 새끼의 체중은 부화한 날부터 평균 24.6일에 가장 높았다. 체중의 증가는 부화 후, 5일에서 22일 사이에 가장 빨랐다.
