Coefficient of friction between components in Total Joint Replacement (TJR) affects the clinical performance. The purpose of this study is to understand frictional characteristics for materials used in TJR Friction tests were conducted by using ultra high molecular polyethylene (UHMWPE) pin against Co-Cr alloy and ceramics disk specimens under the three different contact pressures of 10, 20, and 40MPa in dry and lubricated conditions. All tests were performed in a repeat pass rotational sliding motion with a speed of 60rpm within the bovine calf serum. Data from initial stage of stick zone were discarded and those from steady state were utilized. Coefficients of friction under the dry conditions in UHMWPE against Co-Cr alloy and ceramics were in the similar ranges of 0.04~0.12 that were higher than that under the lubricated conditions in each material. Coefficients of friction under lubricated conditions were in a ranges of 0.02~0.04. Coefficients of friction for all cases decreased as the contact pressure increased.
