Jo Sin-seong, a national and female activist in the Japanese imperialist era, is now a person falling into oblivion in Korean society. We have investigated her life from the Japanese imperialist era to the times of the liberation in order to examine why she is such a person of oblivion in Korea. As a result, we have the following conclusions.
The reasons why Jo was able to be brought up as a national activist are her lone status as a widow, her encounter with Christianity, the geographical peculiarities of Euiju, Pyeongbuk, and her association with other national activists. With this background of her growth, she had constantly carried out national movement throughout the late Korean Empire and the times of Japanese colonial rule. The national movement she was involved includes educational movement, armed struggles against Japan, and activities with women organizations.
Though once she had a status of leader in Pyeongyang, she carried out crossing the border into South Korea. The motives of her crossing include (ⅰ) Kim Il-seong faction's suppression of the national activists by taking power, and (ⅱ) the women organizations activities giving priorities to support for Kim Il-seong faction. Under such circumstances, she was not able to fulfill activities any more in Pyeonyang, on which she had put greater importance than on her birthplace, Euiju, Pyeongbuk. However, there was no place for her to play a role in South Korea. Her only role is to lend her name.
"Buchong(부총)" and "Daehan Buin Hoi(대한부인회)" just used her name: the former was led by socialist women, and the latter by Park Sun-cheon. Knowing politically on which side their bread is buttered, they only needed her personal history as a national activist, and wanted to make propaganda. One of the greatest reasons why she was so miserable during her last years is that she lived a life without political self-interest. This is revealed clearly by O Gi-yeong's mention about her. He described her as follows: "In my view, she has a weakness for not being able to tell someone her own sincerity and true heart. She cannot boast of herself, and take merit to herself for what she has done. Though her excessive cleanness, putting aside private affairs for public ones and not being able to insert her own interests, could persuade others, the reason why there are few people showing faith to her while she is always right is because she cannot exercise her talent for moving others to tears and always does not intend to form a party. Nevertheless, she wouldn't have resorted to trickery for good and all in many respects".
Spending her last years poorly, Jo Sin-seong finished her about 80 years of life at Sinmangae(신망애) Asylum for the Aged in Busan, May 6, 1952. To pay a tribute to the memory of her, Daehan Buin Hoi(대한부인회) passed a resolution to set May 8 as Mother's Day. Nevertheless, there have been few things known about her so far. She has never been considered as a candidate for the Independence Activist This Month, which the government makes publicity, and furthermore there are no such things as the commemorative organization for jo Sinseong, This clearly shows Korean society's consciousness on a women independence activist, who had lived a life only for the independence of the nation without political self-interest.
