In the linguistic context, possession is a fundamental notion which may be defined as an asymmetric relationship between two referents, the possessor versus the possessee. It is a universal domain, that is, any human language can be expected to have conventionalized expression for it. Nevertheless, the linguistic possessive expressions don't seem to represent explicitly the cognitive nature of possession. The range of conceptual meaning of possession is too wide to be reduced to several possessive constructions. It can be represented by the various types of structure both within a particular language and in cross-linguistic comparison.
There is a specific type of possessive construction in Czech. That is the so-called dative of possession, which appears, of course, not only in Czech but also in most of Slavic languages. According to the grammatical descriptions, the usage of this type of dative case in Slavic languages ranges from absent Ukrainian to widespread Czech. It is one of the types of free dative syntactically ungoverned by a verb. It is fundamentally the case category which is not assigned by a lexical property of a predicate. However, in some case it seems to be associated with the property of beneficiary and experiencer, the semantic roles of dative argument. Nevertheless, the dative of possession is generally considered to lack the prototypical semantic feature such as [+DIRECTIONAL to the object] and the peripheral feature [+BENEFACTIVE of the action or state of affairs]. It is rather assumed to have its proper feature [+POSSESSIVE].
This paper argues whether the dative of possession is used to express possession at all and if so whether it expresses solely possession or a more complex content, to what extent it possesses the proper feature [+POSSESSIVE] and which factors enables the appearance of this type of dative. In order to check the existence of the feature [+POSSESSIVE], four analytic manipulations are used as follows. (1) Compatibility between the dative of possession and the possessive determiners (2) Existence of the pragmatic feature [+EMPHATIC] differentiated from possessive determiners (3) Vagueness of boundary line between the dative of possession and dativus (in-)commodi (4) Co-occurrence (or double distribution) of both the dative of possession and possessive determiners.
This paper proposes that unlike the possessive determiners, the dative of possession in Czech is assumed to have relatively week semantic feature of possession but the strong pragmatic feature [AFFECTEDNESS via POSSESSION] in other words, the speaker's empathy. The dative of possession which appears as the possessor of inalienable body parts shows relatively strong possessive feature.
