The elastic and inelastic buckling analyses based on the system buckling approach are convenient tools to evaluate effective length for main structural members such as girders and towers in a steel cable-stayed bridge. Nevertheless, there is an absurdity where the system buckling approaches may yield an unduly large effective length for the members that have a small axial force. The present paper proposes a modification in order to determine the effective length of the members in a steel cable-stayed bridge. The proposed method uses iterative eigenvalue analysis based on the system buckling approach. The concept of a fictitious axial force, which is derived from the relation between the individual buckling limit of each member and the overall buckling of the bridge system, is introduced to overcome the absurdity of the elastic and inelastic buckling analyses. An example of a bridge model used in this study demonstrate that the proposed method not only provides acceptable outcomes overcoming the absurdity of conventional system buckling approaches, but also can be a competitive alternative to evaluate the effective length of the structural members in the practical design of a steel cable-stayed bridge.
