The objective of this paper is to verify the relation between the loss of inflection and grammatical change in English and the influence of structural conservation on the change. There were various occurrences of grammatical changes in English as its rich inflection gradually declined; Nouns with the dative case began to appear in the subject position of the passives in late OE period, and preteritive-present verbs obtained the feature of modal auxiliary. These phenomena arose from the loss of inflection. After morphological difference between dative and accusative disappeared, (S) (V) DO IO construction became unworkable. As a result, the preposition to came into use in front of IO. Choi(2003) claims that infinitives with to could maintain its original usage as noun. In the same way the preposition to in front of IO seems to have been taken up to keep using (S) (V) DO IO construction. Consequently, the loss of inflection triggered grammatical change and caused word order change ultimately, but on the other hand, the tendency to conserve the structure or meaning of previous stages performed its part in the process of the change.
