It is known that the effective wavelength range for photosynthesis is 400-700 ㎚ and assimilation in the red light region is higher than in other regions. We recently developed a spectrum conversion covering film which can convert light from the low active region (green light) to the effective region (red light). Plant growth under the conversion film had not yet been sufficiently reviewed due to the difficulty in developing a durable and weather-resistant conversion film. The film has since been improved and its performance has been evaluated on some vegetables (e.g. onion, Brassicaceae, etc.). Two types of conversion film (60 ㎛ and 100 ㎛ in thickness) were used as well as non-conversion film. The plant growth characteristics and yield were different for celery, lettuce, spinach, and sweet potato. The spectrum conversion of the covering films was analyzed by spectroradiometer for thirteen months. The results for leaf color (SPAD value), top fresh and dry weights of lettuce under the spectrum conversion covering films were better than those under the non-conversion film. In contrast, the growth of celery was higher under the non-conversion film. In addition, the growth of spinach under the conversion films was not as good as that under the non-conversion film, but the tuberous root growth of sweet potatoes under the 60 ㎛ conversion film was greater than under the other films. The light transmissivity of the conversion films did not change over the thirteen months.
