1. Introduction
The present reporter aims to show a certain way of pedigree expression which was recorded both on paper documents and stones & iron monuments in ancient Japan during 5 7 centuries before the first history books Nihon Shoki and Kojiki. had been written. It is natural that not only the way of expression but also the importance of the pedigree itself should be influenced by Chinese and Korean culture of those days.
In fact, the pedigrees were written with Chinese letters in order to record Japanese names and sentences explaining their ancestors’ achievements and other information. As there was no Kana letters at that time, it seems that Japanese asked Koreans or Chinese who had lived in Japan. to compose the sentences and write or carve the letters on documents and monuments.
The data of pedigrees are mainly adopted from inscriptions on stones & iron monuments such as a famous iron sword discovered out from the tomb of 5 centuries in East Japan and stone monuments in 7 8 centuries discovered also in East Japan.
