This paper explores what one’s memory of being sent down to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution means in Han Shaogong’s short story “Homecoming” (1985). I first examine Han's famous essay on the issue of “cultural root-seeking,” demonstrating that Han emphasizes the importance of the perspective from the present in seeking cultural roots in traditional culture. “Homecoming,” which was published two months after this essay, presents another factor to be considered besides the relationship between cultural roots and the present: the memory of being sent down, which is how the so-called “root-seeking” writers experienced the countryside. In the story, the first person narrator, Huang Zhixian, can relate to the mountain village he visits, which can be seen as a reservoir of cultural roots, only through another man, Ma Yanjing, for whom the villagers mistake him. Ma Yanjing used to be in the village as a sent-down educated youth, and the narrator gradually accepts as his own the debt of guilt Ma owes the village. The story describes how Huang can escape neither Ma’s identity nor, in psychological terms, the village itself due to this guilt. Therefore, Ma Yanjing creates a strong, albeit ambiguous, link between the narrator and the village. In doing so, I argue, the memory of being sent down to the countryside, which the narrator finally ends up sharing with Ma, determines the meaning of the ‘cultural roots’ the village represents as something guilt-provoking and inescapable.
