There have been plenty of researches on the meanings and significance of 3ㆍ1 Movement in the history of nationalist movement, and they have naturally defined the Korean nation as the group subject that led the movement. In this study, the investigator tries to raise an objection to the hypothesis that the people, who were the major constituent of the national community, internalized their identity as a single national subject from the beginning. Although there is no doubt that the national conflicts and contradictions grew intense due to the colonial rule of Japan in the 1910s, there were differences in the degree and content among the regions. The 3ㆍ1 Movement took different developments according to the different regional histories. The people took concrete part in the movement, which was developed in diverse ways according to the regions, experienced the national identity in reality, and internalized it.
Specifically speaking, the investigator compared the manse demonstrations that developed in their own different ways in the different areas of Anseong-gun, which was an administrative unit that was integrated in the 1910s, and examined the differences in the mechanism of the people participating in the movement and in their consciousness. It's thus pointed out that the previous studies on 3ㆍ1 Movement, which were conducted by the administrative units, could ironically neglect the movement's regional characteristics. Investigating the locality of 3ㆍ1 Movement is re-perceiving the characteristics of local history not to be absorbed and incorporated into the total history. This study examined such locality, the group subjects of "nation" and "nationalism" experienced through the manse demonstrations, and the people's "thoughts," thus making new approaches toward the people's identity during the Japanese rule.
