It is a commonly held view that one of the most heated debates in the Korean history research circle during the 1980s was one on social status inearly Joseon period. The controversy started with the publication of “Joseonchogi Yangbanyeongu (A Research of Yangban Class in the Early Joseon Period)" by Yi Seong-mu, who divided the society of Joseon dynasty into four social status groups, to which Han Young-woo, author of the dual status theory of Yangcheonje (commoners versus salves status system), raised objection. As the debate intensified, with Yi disputing Han’s argument, Han voicing dissent with Yi again and Song Jun-ho intervening in the controversy, itdrew keen attentions not only from the researchers of Joseon dynasty but also the entire Korean history research circle.
“Yangbanyeongu (The Research on Yangban class)" by Yi Seong -mu was a labored work, shedding lights on concrete features of Yangban status in diverse aspects of politics, economy, sociology and philosophy, while compiling wide range of views on the ruling class of Joseon dynasty. According to the work of Yi, Yangban was a factual ruling class of Joseon society with an upper hand over middle class, Jungin, and its subordinates, commoners and slaves. Joseon dynasty wasestablished as Yangban bureaucrat’s state, and the social structureas such has not changed much during the 500 years of the dynasty.
In contrast, Han Young-woo argued that the social status of the early Joseon period had only two statuses, commoners and slaves, with Yangban merely referring to the ‘government post-holders’ among the commoners, on the ground that those of Yangban class received no privileged treatment, having equal rights (to serve as bureaucrats) and duties (to pay taxes and fulfill military service) to others. Han held the view that Joseon dynasty could strengthen its centralized state power in its direct control of commoners, based on Yangcheonje system. It was as late as in late 16th century that Yangban was established as a privileged class. Given this fact, it was in mid- or late 16th century, at the earliest, that Joseon society was divided into four status groups ruling Yangban group, Jungin middle group and lower group, commoners and slaves.
Controversies involving the “four social status theory" and the dual status theory of “Yangcheonje" were also expanded into following crucial issues how to evaluate mobility in social status of the early Joseon society whether to confirm the existence of Yangban class as rulers in early Joseon period, how to define the characteristics of the dynasty as a state, and how to designate the point of time when the ruling class came into existence. This dissertation explores the academic significance of Yangcheonje theory, based on Han Young-woo’s "Socio-Economic Research on Early Joseon Period."
