This article is about the national consciousness of one of the common people (i.e. a vegetable oil merchant, Ju In-Sik) who was neither an intellectual nor a politician who was able to make an impact on the national agenda. The period? i.e. the late 19th century-when he began to write his diary was the period when nationalism was forming in Korea.
There were two points of disagreement between him and the nationalistic intellectuals who were newspaper editors. One is the matter of their view of the Kojong emperor. Ju In-Sik had been conscious of the state through Kojong when Japan and Russia had invaded the Great Han Empire (=Daehan jeguk, this is the name of Korea from 1897 to 1910), and he blamed the righteous bandit -Hwalbindang-for creating a robber band and criticized the Pro-Japanese high government officials as traitors to his country. In comparison, the newspaper editors regarded the Joseon Dynasty as an obstacle to reform, calling on ancient history (especially Dangun) again as the origin of the nation on behalf of the Joseon Dynasty. Both of them established schools for the enlightening of the Korean people. He could not have established the Kyeunmyung school if he had not obtained help from the local community-the village association called Donghoe(洞會). The village people began to think that they were not subjects of Dynasty society but they had twenty-million compatriots in Korea.
Another one is the matter of the righteous army. Ju In-Sik had a deep respect for the leaders of the righteous army against Japanese imperialism and he imagined his country's future through them. However, the newspaper editors criticised them as an obstacle to civilization.
This case shows that the national consciousness was not only something that was imagined as a project from above but it was also closely related to the culture which accumulated from the bottom of society.
