Verbal aspect in Russian is a grammatical category that can be a special actualization of the semantic category "Aspect", which is universal in language. But verbal aspect in Russian has very complex characteristics unlike other grammatical categories. So, in the recent studies of aspect, various attempts have been carried out so as to prescribe the grammatical phase of verbal aspect in Russian. However, those attempts reached a limitation in that they had no other choice but to perceive verbal aspect as a intermediate category between inflectional and derivational categories. Those studies targeted aspectual pairs to set the type of grammatical categories of verbal aspect. The author, however, noticed that the scope of the investigation had problems, as the author had already confirmed the aspectual function of verb lexemes in the prior study. As for the scope of investigation, this study presented the formation of all forms created from a basic verb beyond aspectual pairs; that is, the domain of aspect-formation including the aspectual pair, Aktionsart, and separate lexemes. The author is assured that only such a macro approach could overcome the limitations of the prior studies, and define the grammatical phase of verbal aspect in Russian from the unified perspective.
The study concludes that 1) aspect of basic verbs is a classificatory category, in which the aspectual meaning is expressed by the lexical meaning of verbs, and, 2) aspectual opposition exists in the various levels of aspect-formation, and aspect-formation is a derivation by the process of word-formation due to the morphological and semantic characteristics. Lastly, by intensively illuminating the aspectual pairs, which has become a problem, it is proved that aspectual pairs can be characterized as derivation, consistent with overall aspect-formation. This study defines verbal aspect in Russian as a classificatory category having quite a degree of correlation and a means of word-formation as a characteristic. This definition can present a unified aspect-formation system harmonizing verbs of various levels that are formed from a basic verb. And, the definition can also be the one that esteems intuitive coherence between the factors of an aspectual pair, which are peculiar to aspectual pairs.
