Asbestos is WHO classified top class carcinogen mineral and has life cycle such as mining→manufacturing→consumption→waste treatment. Asbestos exposure could be happened all the life cycle process environmentally and occupationally. So far asbestos problem has been known as industrial issues but environmental exposure and damages has been issues recently according to various type exposure and victims case reports academically and socially. Here some environmental exposure and damage cases are introduced, which are known recently by environmental research group and scholars.
Case1; 2 cases of abandoned asbestos mine and environmental contamination as well as health problems. In Je?Cheon city, Chung?Cheong?Buk province, 7 asbestos mines are recorded in the past particularly during the Japanese colonial time and a couple of decades after the Korean war. Tremolite, the highly toxic substance was found in the surface soil of agricultural fields and on a school playing ground. Although it has not been confirmed, it is suspected that the asbestos contamination originated from a local quarry near which a tremolite vein was found. In Hong?Sung city and Bo?Ryung city, Chung?Cheong?Nam province, a result of X?ray film reading of 215 local people living nearby abandoned asbestos mines who are selected randomly from 5 villages was 110 patients of 51% with asbestosis and pleural plaques. It is for the first time in Korea to be found asbestos mine victims.
Case2; A question is raised that a mesothilioma patient, an asbestos cancer, is suspected to have been exposed asbestos environmentally from 2 times massive old type houses demolition from new house construction plan. This patient has no any asbestos related job history. In Korea, new resident house and commercial building project has been very popular over 20 years all over the country.
Case3; Termolite and Actinolite were detected from dust samples at 4 Seoul subway stations, 1 sample is exceeded 5 times more than the solid standard. This means that large number of passengers have been at risk of asbestos exposure.
According to a survey by environmental ministry, over 80% of countryside buildings are covered by asbestos slate roof materials. This means a lot of local people could be exposed by this substance. 20% of hundreds air samples are over standards 0.01 fiber/cc, particularly around the construction waste treatment sites are seriously contaminated. From educational ministry, 88%of school buildings use asbestos materials at ceiling of classrooms, partition plate of toilets and so on.
Due to lack of knowledge about asbestos usage and exposure type, environmental asbestos problems are very new and beginning to touch in Korea. On the contrary occupational cases could be relieved by industrial insurance system, environmental cases have no law or system to get any compensation or medical care. Thus there are 3 suggestions for this issue. First, special new law for compensation and preventive activities is highly needed. Second, national asbestos map showing asbestos exposure sources could be first step for asbestos policy. Mapping of individual public buildings like school is essential for no more asbestos exposure. Third, ‘national asbestos centre’ should be established and do key body for asbestos problem solving.
