This article examines the contradiction of sexual orientation which is most prevalent in Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The patterns of contradiction to be explored in this article include reality vs. illusion, the Old South vs. the New South, heterosexuality vs. homosexuality.
One of the most important things in exploring Williams is that he is from the South. The South in Williams' literature not only serves as the most common setting, but also evokes all the paradoxes and contradictions that Williams seems to have found in the Southern tradition. All the contradictions inherent in the Southern culture have shaped Williams' imagination and manifested themselves as determining forces on the lives of his most memorable characters.
In eat on a Hot Tin Roof, the sexual conflict of the characters, basically originated from homosexuality, provides the major motif for one of many contradictions. Brick is ambivalent in his sexual attitude, feeling homosexuality toward Skipper and, at the same time, heterosexuality toward his wife, Maggie. Brick, dualistic in his sexual attitude, eventually escapes from his homosexual propensity and attains a heterosexual condition. Brick, who normalized his sexual attitude to heterosexuality, reaches sexual adjustment with Maggie who had always adhered to her heterosexual attitude.
Employing all aspects of life in the American South as his subject matter, Williams steadily grasps a wide variety of contradictory patterns derived from conflicts between the two contradictory cultures. And he emphasizes the radical, cultural conflict as well as the collision phenomena which only the Southerners experience. As a Southern writer and intellect, Williams presents a comprehensive and systematic device for us to understand the contradictory patterns and duality derived from the very special cultural structure of the American South according to his cognitive developmental stage of life and the times.
