We estimated the mean residence time (MRT) of water in the Gwangneung catchment, Korea, using ³Hand <SUP>35</SUP>S based methods and discussed its implications for catchment hydrological cycle and water resource management. The weighted mean ³H concentration in the discharging streamwater during the study period was similar to that of precipitation, indicating theMRT of water in the study area to be ~1 year orwithin the uncertainty range of the adopted technique. The calculated MRT based on <SUP>35</SUP>S varied with changing water regime in the study area and ranged from 20~40 days during rainy periods to 100~120 days during dry periods. The relatively short MRT in the Gwangneung catchment likely negates the possibility of a long term, substantial storage of water in the subsurface reservoirs and asserts that the precipitation (and relatively ‘young’water) serves as the immediate and dominant source of catchment hydrological processes such as stream runoff and evapotranspiration.We interpret the results as an indication that, in catchments of this type, a secure water supply will depend more on the effective management of the surface water rather than the exploitation of subsurface water reservoirs.
