We have been confused with spoken and written language. This phenomenon caused us to confuse in linguistic terms. We have equated with syllables and characters. But some works recently indicated that spoken and written languages have their own domain and linguistic terms. Based on this, I try to make a difference between syllables and characters. First of all, I investigate into the systematic difference between phonemes and graphemes. As a result, I find out that one to one correspondence between phonemes and graphemes does not actually exist. And then, I look into the definition and structure of syllables and characters. The syllable is composed of phonemes, whereas the character consists of graphemes. Although the syllable and character have three constituents, the actual structure does not correspond. Consequently, I could know that the structural type of syllable is 8, whereas the character has 21 structural types.
