This paper examines one of the underexplored areas of inquiry in conversation analysis, specifically marked reference forms for first and second persons in English conversation. In particular, I focus on examining categorical reference that is deployed in the position where the default forms I/me or you would otherwise appear. Targeted are two types of categorical reference that invoke a specified or an unspecified category: category terms and indefinite pronouns someone/anyone. Through the detailed analysis of the sequential environments where thetarget categorical reference forms appear, I argue that they are used as a resource for defending, justifying, or countering a possible challenge against the legitimacy of an assertion without explicitly relating to either speaker or recipient.
