In this paper, I studied what syntactic informations should be described in the noun phrase(NP) dictionary which is being made in the branch of NP Dictionary of the department of Developing Electronic Dictionary in the 21st Sejong Project.
Ⅰ argued that the NP dictionary should contain the following syntactic informations.
(i) the most basic one in the structures for which a head noun take its complement(s)
(ⅱ) how the basic structures of NPs vary
(ⅲ) the description of NPs in which head nouns are combined with not their complements but modifiers of ‘N’ (lexical category), that is NPs of 'N+N' form
And I argued concretely about (ⅱ) especially. Firstly, in the NP dictionary how the argument markers vary(that is whether the form of variation is realization of markers or non-realization of them and whether markers themselves vary or not) should be described.
Secondly, how the word order of complements varies should be described. Thirdly, It should be shown that in real texts which form of NPs in which complements of the head noun are realized is more valuable than others.
From a certain viewpoint, It can be said that a NP is ‘a reduction form of a sentence’. In a NP, the complements can be realized which are equivalent to subject, object in a sentence and the adnominals can be realized which are equivalent to adverbials in a sentence. Therefore the work of describing the NP’s structure classified by various types is very similar to describing the sentence types. Especially, the constructions of ‘adnominals of lexical noun category + head noun’, namely the construction of ‘Nl+N2’ are worth describing in the lexicography because they are frequently used and have much chance of experiencing lexicalization. This assertion is specially valuable in the electronic dictionary which is oriented to the work of mechanical translation.
