The domestic discord and the civil war in Koguryo are related to succession to the throne.
The representative civil war in Koguryo history was the conflict which was about succession to the throne after King Gogukcheon(故國川王) died. During that time, two governments were coexisting and confronting. It became international war which included Liao-dong(遙東) province.
Around 470, King Jangsu(長壽王) purged the noble. It was not just because of opposition about transferring of the capital to Pyong-yang castle(平壤城) or strengthen the royal authority. It was the reason that King Jangsu set up the succession nomination by force, which caused the conflict. But, in the middle of the 6th century, in relation to enthronement of King Yangwon(陽原王), Palace-gate was the place that the bloodshed civil war broke out.
Palace-gate was the symbolic place that King's will and public opinion were delivered the people. So, in front of the Palace-gate, the force showdown happened because of successor of King Anwon(安原王). That tradition made Palace-gate the place that Daedaero(大對盧 : the position that had the real power in Koguryo) was elected. The last military coup of Yeongaesomoon(淵蓋蘇文) in Koguryo history, which was related to profit. And it ceased the noble coalition system.
