Readability testing is being conducted for various digital media, and the technological advancement in display resolution or mobility is creating constant changes in the testing criteria. Without understanding readability in a broad sense from a typographical aspect to a psychological aspect, readability testing would not be valid as its testing results fluctuate according to constantly changing criteria or a varying environment of readability. This paper first reviews different aspects of readability according to G. R. Klare’s definitions of readability. Those readability aspects are 1) semantic and configurative, 2) graphic, and 3) cognitive. The semantic and configurative sense affects the understanding of the text due to the style of writing. The graphic sense is directly related to the ways handwriting or typography is presented. The cognitive sense can be attributed to the interest-value and pleasantness of the readers. Readability can be accurately measured if all the perception variables are handled in a consistent way. After discussing the issues and elements of readability in different aspects, the readability testing criteria are defined. The testing criteria involve the text in use, its factors relations, and the homogeneity of the testing environment. Text can be presented through various typographic and spatial attributes. It can be viewed by itself or with images, interaction, or sound. The relationship among these factors can be complementary, redundant, stage-setting, or juxtapositional. Understanding different facets of readability as a foundation, and testing the perceived visual qualities of the text in relation to other factors in the parity of criteria will enable readability testing from a holistic visual design perspective.
