The purpose of this study was to apply Minimal Flow Analysis(MFA) to 'Regional Input-Output Table in 2003' which was prepared for the first time in Korea, and thereby visualize how the industrial linkages have been formed among 6 regional economies in Korea.
As a result, it was found that there are unbalanced industrial linkages formed among those 6 regional economies; The formation of Korean domestic industrial linkages has been focused on Seoul & Gyeonggi metropolitan economy(as major axis) and Gyeongnam economy(as minor axis).
By industrial type, it was found that Seoul & Gyeonggi metropolitan economy has formed strong forward linkages with local industry including Gyeongnam, Gyeongbuk, Jeolla and Chungcheong economy. On the other hand, it was found that the construction industry of Seoul and Gyeonggi metropolitan economy has formed significant backward linkages with most metropolitan industries including basic material, machinery, electrics/electronics and service industry. Thus, it is estimated that any slump of construction industry would have significant impact primarily on Seoul and Gyeonggi metropolitan economy.
By economic area, as long as only major industry is concerned, it was found that Chungcheong economy showed more significant outbound industrial linkages with Seoul & Gyeonggi economy, rather than inbound industrial linkages. Based on geographical neighborship, both economies showed very significant interdependent relationships with each other in light industry as well as between light industry and service industry.
Summing up, these findings suggest that central government should fully reflect interregional industrial linkages for more efficiently establishing balanced national development strategy, while local government should also allow for outbound interactions or feedback effects with other significantly related regions as well as its own territory when preparing local development policies.
