In this thesis, I reviewed the materials and the characteristics of Kyomyeong(敎命) and the related documents, Chaekmoon(冊文), and analyzed the forms of Kyomyeong based on two Kyomyeongs kept in Jangseo-gak Library.
Kyomyeong means a written ordinance issued by the King when he grants the titles of Queen, Crown Prince, Crown Princess, younger brother of the King and his consort, the eldest grandson of the King and his consort etc. All of the existing Kyomyeongs of the Joseon Dynasty were written on silks. When it started is unclear, however the Kyomyeong had been written on papers until 1437, and afterwards, it was written on silks according to the records. Although most of the historical documents were written on papers, the documents written on silks were limited to the royal documents of which issuers and receivers were related to the royal household. The royal household had prepared the documents on silks due to an economical reason, however it appears to be connected with the authority of the royal family. Therefore, the Messages to the vassals were written on thicker fabrics of wild silk, of which materials were superior in quality to paper but poorer in quality than silk, the symbol of the royal house. There was Chaekmoon that was granted along with the Kyomyeong and its material was classified into jade and bamboo based on the receiver of Chaekmoon. Okchaek(玉冊) made of jade was issued when the receiver was of the same rank in the Royal line or was a predecessor of the king. On the other hand, Jookchaek(竹冊) made of bamboo was issued when the receiver was not of the same rank of the Royal line even though he/she was a predecessor of the King, or when he/she was a successor.
In terms of the form of the Kyomyeong, I examined the related names of Kyomyeong, color and name of the silks and the detailed and entire size of the Kyomyeong on the basis of the two cases, Uisosesonjeong Sesonchaekbong Kyomyeong(懿昭世孫?世孫冊封敎命) and Gyeongbingeumssi Ganbincaekbong Kyomyeong(慶嬪金氏揀嬪冊封敎命) kept in Jangseo-gak Library. The key point of the form of Kyomyeong is the five-color silk. The documents were prepared on the five-color silk in the order of red, yellow, deep blue, white and black. The five-color silk was decorated on the four sides of the frame with flying phoenixes on the upper and lower sides, and cloud patterns on right and left sides. Moreover, long silks were attached to both sides in order to protect the five-color silk of Kyomyeong and silks of two types were fixed on the back side of Kyomyeong.
As for the related names of the scroll type Kyomyeong, I observed 'Hweongchook(橫軸)'(a spindle to maintain the scroll), 'Byeonjook(邊竹)'(a bar to roll up the scroll to the end), 'Daeja(帶子)'(a belt to fix the scroll rolled up), 'Geomooljeong(巨勿丁)'(a ring to connect the silk of Kyomyeong with Daeja), 'Cheomja(籤子)'(a pin that looks like an ornamental hairpin to finally fix after the Kyomyeong is belted around with Daeja) etc.
