This thesis is to study the image of Chosun people through Japanese illustration in the Meiji period, especially from the Treaty of Kangwha to the annexation of Korea by Japan.
The image of Chosun people different from reality one had been spread throughout Japan until the middle of the 1880's. For men's hair-styles, the lock of their hair was twisted on the crown of the head and pierced by an ornamental hairpin. And the costume and the accessories of Chosun people were quite varied. At a glance, the image of Chosun people resembled Japanese living earlier and the contemporary Chinese. Yet, in Japanese illustrations were expressed the images of Chosun people which were inferior to the Japanese and not yet civilized. This was the result of Japanese receiving a view of world by dichotomy-"civilization" and "savageness"-introduced from the West at the end of the Edo Bakufu period.
From the latter part of the 1880's, when the camera was partly distributed to the Japanese and the photo gradually began to replace the picture, the recognition of the Japanese concering the image of Chosun people became closer to reality. But after the critical occasion of the Sino-Japanese War, the image that Chosun was vaguely inferior to Japan took concrete shape and became fixed. The image indicated that Chosun people were unclean, lazy, and helpless. In addition, men were weak, women aggressive and sensual. In a sense, this resembles the image of "savageness" established by the West. This image was reflected in illustrations directly or indirectly.
Thus Imperial Japan continuously formed the differential and inferior image of the colonized people in the process of colonization.
