The situation of Korean women engaged in sexual industry in Manchuria reflects that of an Koreans in that state. The discrimination for sex workers according to nationality is shown in that more Japanese women worked as trained entertainers (Geisha, Kisaeng) willie more Koreans worked as registered barmaids, and that Koreans were the majority as cafe waitresses while Chinese were the majority in barmaids. This national discrimination in the status of those engaged in these activities is related to the discriminative status of pimps and purchasers. In general, Korean sex workers were hired by Korean employers and served Koreans. However, in the case of kisaeng houses, Koreans succeeded in expanding the guest network to Japanese. This case was praised as a break from “Korean dependency,” and was said to be the model of successful Korean businesses in the future. But, the relation between Korean sex workers and Japanese sex buyers implicated inequality in itself. It is thought that it paved the way to creating “Korean comfort women” working for Japanese soldiers, closing peoples eyes to the inequality of Korean sex workers and praising the success of the sex businesses in making money from the view point of employers- in others words not to criticise ‘colonialism’ in sexuality in itself. If not so, it is very hard to understand the long silence of the existence of Korean sex slaves working for the Japanese military, and of those still engaged in the sex industry in present.
