The charring rate is a basic principle for burning behavior of fire exposed timber. The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of charring depth, temperature and fire exposure time of heavy timber. For the study, the standard fire tests were conducted using full-scale furnaces. The variation of temperature achieved by thermocouples in a beam specimen of Douglas-fir from North America was observed in related with charring rate. The moisture have delayed the inner temperature rising especially at 20mm beneath of timber surface. The cumulative temperature delaying time and charring rate varied linearly and the coefficient of correlation of them appeared 0.9924. As compared with a simple empirical model which was proposed by White, the charring rate of beam derived from the test results appeared lower than column at near 60minutes and it agreed well when reach about 90minutes. It can be considered that was caused by the difference of timber section size and heating conditions. As a result of this study it seemed that a useful basic summary of charring characteristic of heavy timber have gained. Furthermore, it can be possible of establishing fire design model for domestic timber structure through various experimental research results.
