Every lexical item has an edge feature (EF). EF is the formal representation of the notion of (free) merge. EF distinguishes non-mergeable items like interjections from mergeable ones (Chomsky 2008). EF induces external merge (EM) and internal merge (IM) (Chomsky 1995). There should be two types of IM: unmarked IM and marked IM. It is claimed that the unmarked IM is not subject to the deterministic feature-checking at the narrow syntax but only to the interpretive system at the interface, whereas marked IM is induced by an Agreeing head at the narrow syntax. It is argued that marked IM is restricted to the final link of an obligatory movement chain, whereas unmarked IM should apply where marked IM can not apply. The interpretive system for unmarked IM is motivated as a theoretical contribution to the theory of the Minimalist Program.
