The purpose of this study is to examine approaches to the structure of cleft sentences in English such as the extrapositional approach, the expletive approach, the constructional approach, and the Role and Reference Grammar approach, and investigate the natures of the four components of cleft sentences.
The extrapositional approach focuses on the copular nature of cleft sentences, treats the cleft clause as being related to, or modifying, the cleft pronoun. Together these form a semantic unit and the clefted constituent is identified with this unit through the use of the copula.
Under the expletive approach, the cleft pronoun and the copula are relegated to being expletive, dummy, semantically inert elements, while the cleft cleft clause bears a semantic relation to the clefted constituent.
The constructional approach interprets cleft sentences as a combination of two coded relationships which are part of the constructions themselves. First, the relationship between the cleft clause and its antecedent, the clefted constituent, constitutes a 'value-variable' relation, rather than head-modifier as in restrictive relative clause. This approach proposes that there is a second identifying semantic relation within the copular matrix clause. The cleft pronoun performs a quantificational role and is equated via the copula with the clefted constituent.
Under the Role and Reference Grammar approach, there are syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic similarities between restrictive relatives and it-cleft constructions but there are some differences. The function of a cleft construction is a combination of the relative clause relationship and the information structure properties of the copular matrix clause. The clef ted clause is peripheral to the matrix clause, however, rather than the clefted constituent. The relationship between the cleft clause and the clefted constituent is not as a modifier of a nominal head but as a clause containing a variable for which the referential clefted constituent provides the value. The content of the pragmatic presupposition of cleft sentences is not to be found solely in the semantic content of the cleft clause without reference to the clef ted constituent.
The natures of each component of a cleft sentence are different depending on the approaches to cleft sentences.
In conclusion, various kinds of the previous approaches to cleft sentences have their own advantages and disadvantages. However, it is estimated that the Role and Reference Grammar approach, which analyzes cleft sentences by combining syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic aspects, is the most persuasive one among them. by combing syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic approaches. But further research in cleft sentences seems to be needed.
