The purpose of this study is to understand how Korean late mid life women view 'successful aging' and to identify the major influences affecting their perceptions utilizing a qualitative approach. This qualitative study used personal narratives extracted from tape recorded interviews of 20 late midlife women in their fifties and analyzed issues relating to their future prospects in transition to old age. The prospects and expectations of 'successful aging' were influenced by factors such as present personal and social contexts. Three main themes associated with their thoughts on 'successful aging' emerged from their narratives: 'keeping good relations,' 'keeping dignity as mothers,' and 'keeping social values.' These were all likely to be formed by contextual influences. These three themes were believed to show that "independency" in daily lives and "connectedness" in the social world were the most prominent issues for good old age. These results show that late midlife women were actively negotiating with themselves and their surroundings in order to overcome losses, maintain potentialities, and in the process acknowledge impending old age for better preparation. Moreover, at the societal level, the need for various supports and services to enhance the quality of life for the elderly was recognized. 'Successful aging' is not just to be considered a personal experience anymore, but a more social act.
