The paper provides a profile on the reproductive health status of women among the south Asian countries. In specific, examines the status of women on three core issues of reproductive health; age at marriage, characteristics of fertility and contraception and maternal health. The paper emerges out of intensive latest data collection from various sources including the reports produced by the participating countries in South Asia as part of the Gender Planning Network project of the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada. The data sources include the latest national health surveys and census publications in the five countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan) UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO publications. It illustrates these variations through simple tabulation to compare, identify the trend and lacunae in the policies among these countries. In specific, this paper tries to explore the situation of reproductive health in the five countries and tries to answer some questions on what went wrong in some of the countries and what can be learnt from the success stories. In this context it provides an overview of selected aspects of the reproductive and sexual health of women in the countries of South Asia including; age at marriage, fertility and contraception and maternal health.
