This paper studies on the education of Ancient Israel through the two traditions of the Old Testament, "Shema(???)" and Hokmah(???????), which represent the Torah and the Wisdom traditions, respectively. These two traditions appear ambivalent in the Old Testament theology. However, this paper reveals that a converging point of the two takes place in the furnace of the wisdom education in the ancient Israel.
Previous scholarly works have indicated three educational backgrounds in Israel: family, school, and royal court. Common expression, "My son" in the Proverbs reflects the background of family education in which popular educations were given. On the other hand, those educations in schools and the royal court provided expert knowledge and skills for the elite class who would work for the government.
While "Shema" tradition emphasizes piety in which Israelites identify themselves as the people of God in the legal covenant with Yahweh, Hokmah tradition stresses the knowledge of God who reigns all over the created world. These two "Shema" piety and Hoknah knowledge constituted two main streams of the ancient Israelite education.
When we reach to the period of the Sirach, early second century BCE, we see that the Wisdom is identified with the Law. The fear of Yahweh in Hokmah tradition shares the value of covenantal loyalty with the Torah tradition. The essential elements of the Israelite peculiar education that contains both legal and sapiential traditions are integral, audible, spiritual, communal, and invitational. Finally, We can conclude that the goal of the education of ancient Israel is the formation of the community of God's people, that is to say, the building of the Kingdom of God.
