A new form of subjectivity is the most important source for constructing a feminist theory and theology in which the notion of difference is expressed positively and freely. This subjectivity attempts not to resolve contradiction in a false universalism but rather to let the other be and let the other be different. It goes beyond similarity and contradiction to posit a togetherness of differences.
In this paper, I will show that the positive meaning of difference is more effectively explored in Irigaray’ works. I propose, therefore, that the notion of difference, especially sexual difference, not as a negative connotation but as a positive affirmation of strength and creativity, has been increasingly important in the search for a new form of subjectivity. Irigaray insists that we think about women and men and their respective Gods as irreducibly different in the sense that everything about the other is incomprehensible. The urgency of thinking of differences differently, of working for differences and against domination within a feminist theological and theoretical framework is crucial not only for Korean feminist scholars but also for feminist scholars in the west.
